I am unsure why this is not better known, but Martin Luther King Jr. came to Montclair and spoke.  The picture below shows him walking to the Union Baptist Church on September 11, 1966.  He spoke during the church service and later addressed over 3,000 people in the high school auditorium and gym.  There is a plaque (pictured below) in the high school band room where he waited before going on stage.​  This link will take you to a short video of two people's memories of being part of his visit... click here.
