When you ask your child what they did in school today and they say, "Nothing"... check here to start a discussion by seeing what we did in science or social studies class.  I will post a brief description of our work and your child can fill in the rest.

"You're mad, bonkers, completely off your head. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are."

SPHERobotics came in 1st place in our region and our code is going to be run of the International Space Station (ISS) on August 11th.  How cool is that?  Check out our video...

The MFEE are trying to engage 2500 people to donate just $25 to support our public schools - they are asking parents, administrators, teachers, students, business folks (basically anyone who has a stake in our schools!).

If a school enlists 150 people to donate, MFEE awards $500 to the school PTA; 200 donors yields $1000.  If donors snap a photo with a sign that reads "I helped my school thrive with my 25!" and emails it to [email protected], it will be entered in a lottery to earn an additional $1000 for that school.Donate at:  www.mfee.org (click on the 25 for 25 link and look for your school's page on the lower right-hand corner of the landing page.)

We spoke about two interesting figures with interesting nicknames that related to the 13 colonies.  Silver Nails (Peter Stuyvesant) was the Director General of New Netherlands.  His nickname comes from his wooden leg that had silver nails in it.  Johan Printz was the man in charge of New Sweden (that will become New Jersey and Delaware).  He was rather large.  He was referred to as Big Tub by the native people, but probably not to his face.  With almost no help from Sweden, he runs the colony.  He was considered the biggest person in the Americas.  He was 7 feet tall and weighed 400lbs.  That brings us to the picture. How big is 7 feet tall and 400lbs? Wilt Chamberlain (scored 100 points in an NBA game) is on the left and was 7’1” and 275lbs.  Andre the Giant (wrestler) is on the right and was 7’4” and around 450lbs.  Arnold Schwarzenegger is in the middle and is 6’2” and 250lbs.

Here are some of the things your kids are thankful for...

Some of you coming to this site may have heard about it from last years students or parents.  I loved this site.  It was a great way for me to share what we did everyday in class with the parents and extra info for the students.  Central Office wants to close down these sites and migrate everyone to the Google Apps For Eduction template.  I am waiting on a final decision (doesn't look good) about this sites future.  I will let you know when I get the final word.

The explorers we study in class are still in the news... NY Post 11/19/2016

This one needs a little explanation.  Steve Twomey, a Pulitzer Prize winner, is a Montclair resident that just released a book about the 12 days leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor.  This year is the 75th anniversary of the event, but there is more to the story that connects to our class work (Age of Exploration).  At a book signing, Mr. Twomey spoke about Japan not only attacking the USA in Pearl Harbor, but simaltanously attacking the European colonies in the South Pacific.  These colonies had been under European (later American - Philippines) control since the explores sailed to Asai in the 1500's.  This just is a great connection for the students to understand that history is not dead or isolated.  At least I feel that way.

I started a library this year for the students.  There are a couple of hundred books and the kids are borrowing.  If you have any used children/young adult books you are looking to donate, I would love to add them to the collection.

We were literally just talking about this a couple of days ago.  We are learning about the early Americans, but had to start at the beginning... Africa.

We made it!!!  I had a great first day (I think the kids did also) and can't wait to get back to school tomorrow.

In my class, the kids spent a most of the time today getting their binders set up, dealing with the supplies, discussing our rules (and why we have them), reviewing the topics for science and social studies, getting reacquainted each other and getting to know me.  The students also had a project...

Build the tallest tower that can support a tape dispenser (the plastic type).  They had only index cards to use and it was interesting to see the different construction methods used.  The best part for me... when their towers fell.  Not because I take great delight in student failures.  On the contrary... I want the students to not see the collapses as a failure, but an opportunity to make changes and build again.  That is what I saw happen today.

The tallest tower was 31"...Awesome!

I am honored to have received the Weston Teaching Award tonight.  I put in 110% everyday, because I truly love teaching and It is a fabulous bonus to be recognized for all my hard work.  Thanks to all the parents and students that took the time to write a heartfelt recommendation.  Thanks to all the parents and students that have said "great job" along the way this year.  It really means more than you can imagine.
